When I was very small, not yet in school, I found my brother and a neighbor boy at the side of the house engaged in naughty behavior. They had a magnifying glass, a bug and the power of the sun. These young scientists were testing the theory that a bug can get hot enough to ignite under the power of a magnifying glass. I was allowed to stay and watch, but sworn to secrecy.
We must not have had the right combination of factors, however, no flaming bug occurred. Which is a good thing! That was a very dangerous experiment those young boys were attempting. We had dry weeds all around our house that could have caught on fire much easier than that hard-shelled insect.
The power of magnification is an interesting aspect of physical science. Do you know how it works?
