Math Strategies – Working Backwards

Eric purchased several packages of gum.  Each package contained 12 pieces of gum.  On his way home he shared his gum with many of his friends.

At the ball field, he gave away 18 pieces.  On the corner he gave away 3 pieces.  At the playground he gave away 15 pieces.

When he got home he gave away 2 more.  Eric still had 10 pieces left.  How many packages did he buy?

Start with the 10 that Eric has and working backward, add back the ones that he gave away.  Finally divide into groups of one dozen to find out how many packs.

Make up some of your own work backwards stories.
