Like most people I know, I had my wisdom teeth extracted at the time they started coming in. There was no room in my mouth for more teeth, my dentist told me. The wisdom teeth would crowd my other teeth and push them out of shape. Being one of the fortunate few whose teeth grew in straight without the adolescent ritual of braces, I wasn't going to let some newcomers crowd out the pearly whites who had served me well all these years.
But, hey! Are we less wise than we might have been because our mouths don't contain wisdom teeth?
Probably not since not all people refer to these late-blooming teeth as wisdom teeth. In Turkey they are called 20-year teeth. Romanians grow mind teeth, Koreans love teeth. And the Japanese call them unknown-to-parent teeth.
