Belling the Cat
When my brothers and sisters and I were growing up, milkweed grew on the roadsides next to our house. That meant that monarch butterflies could be seen in abundance in the summer time.
But the most fun of all was to bring a branch of milkweed in the house along with a striped caterpillar. We would take a glass jar, poke holes in the lid and place the branch and caterpillar inside.
We would then watch that caterpillar turn into the most beautiful emerald-green chrysalis with (honest-to-goodness) gold sparkles at the top. In just a couple of weeks, a wet, crumpled butterfly would emerge. We would take it out into the sunshine, stand back and watch the beautiful wings dry and lift the butterfly into the air for its first flight.
So, what do you know about butterflies?
