Math Skills – Mental Challenges

Here's a challenging, no equipment necessary, Math game. The best part is that it adapts easily to the skill level of each individual.

  • Player One starts by stating and solving a Math problem out loud. Perhaps the problem is subtraction. 48 – 27 = 21
  • Player Two must then start with the number 21. A beginning learner might say 21 is two tens and one one.
  • Player Three starts with two tens and one one. Two tens and one one behind a decimal point is twenty-one hundredths.
  • Player Four: .21 of $1.00 is 21 cents.
  • Player Five: If I had 21 cents and two friends, each of us would have 7 pennies.

Hint:  Place your youngest players so his or her turn comes after a more advanced player.  This person can then manipulate a problem to result in numbers the beginning learner can use.
