This simple card game is not only fun, but is also an excellent tool for promoting mental math and predicting. The number of cards dealt can be varied according to the skill level of the players, but one card is always dealt face up with the remaining cards (generally 1 to 3) dealt face down.
Players must then declare a prediction as to whether their hand will be the lowest or the highest hand when all the cards are face up and counted (all face cards equal 10).
Most people enjoy the game more with a bit of a wager involved either pennies or toothpicks (use assorted money denominations to encourage money counting skills). Each player contributes to the kitty an equal amount and the cards are turned up.
If someone has predicted a high score and was correct, while at the same time another player has predicted a low score and was correct, the pot is divided between the two. If no predictions came true, the pot remains for the next hand.
