Everyday Science – Make A Prediction

Whenever my mother boiled water, when she was cooking spaghetti for example, she always sprinkled some salt into the water. When I asked her about the salt, she said that it made the water come to a boil faster.

I never did test that theory! Please find out if my mother was correct or if we just ate saltier spaghetti for the flavor.

Things to remember:

• Use the same amount of water for each test
• Some pans are specially built to get hot more quickly. Use similar pans.
• If you use the same pan twice, make sure it has cooled back down before the second test.
• Same is true for a burner. Make sure it has cooled before using it again.
• Test some other additives: sugar, baking powder, cocoa, etc.
