Science – Forming Hypotheses

The first thing you will need is a question.  That shouldn’t be too hard.  Go outside.  Watch a television program on one of the science channels.  Read a book or encyclopedia. 

For example, you are in your backyard and you see an area of bare dirt with a hole in the center.  Your question could be, “What made that hole?” 

Now comes the reasoning.  Are there any living creatures around the hole?  Are there cobwebs or debris around the hole?  Do you see any tracks or markings in the nearby area? 

Now start thinking up as many logical answers as seem possible.  Is it a snake hole?  Do ants or spiders live down there?  Did a kid make it with a stick?  It is not necessary to answer the questions, just stretch your brain to consider as many different possibilities as you can.
